The music on the debut album from the collective trio Auge is wide-open, operating from an unobstructed vista where everything seems possible. The musicians, even when guided by a loose composition, fully embrace freedom but they wield it as one, moving in tandem and responding with seamless unity, with each member displaying an individuality honed over many years while applying an uncommon unanimity. Free improvisation rarely sounds so cogent, rippling with an adroit command of rhythm and harmony that erases the line between design and spontaneity.
